About
I am a digital artist and poet based in Scotland, working with photography, digital drawing and painting, and words.
Images and words have been connected for me for as long as I can remember. As a child, I drew at my grandmother's house, invented stories for my younger sister, and discovered photography with an old camera my father gave me. I am still, in different ways, doing all three.
Storytelling lies at the heart of my practice. I am drawn to colour, movement, atmosphere and unexpected relationships, and to the connections between people, other living beings and the environments we share. Through my work, I explore how altering the way we see affects our perception of these relationships: movement can disrupt a photographic moment; drawing and painting can transform a photograph; restraining colour can change what becomes visually significant; and words can change our relationship with an image. When image and language come together, each can change the way we encounter the other, opening up different ways of seeing and the possibility of new stories.
I believe we each bring our own experiences and ways of seeing to an artwork. When viewers find something in my work I may not have intended, they bring something of themselves to the encounter. I want to leave space for that — for curiosity, reflection and the possibility of listening to an inner voice. For me, that is where art can become powerful: a different way of seeing can open the possibility of change, and sometimes of action.
